Help & advice about horse ownership

Why should I feed Veteran Care in preference to other senior mixes?

At British Horse Feeds we’ve gone that extra mile in researching the effects of ageing and we’ve used our conclusions to design Veteran Care. Inclusion of whole milk and yucca helps offset the potentially damaging effects of ageing. Additionally our parent company, I’Anson Bros. Ltd., has over 100 years of manufacturing feeds from top quality raw materials, backed up by the experience of a dedicated technical and production team.

Is Cool ‘n’ Calm suitable for laminitics?

The starch levels in Cool’n’Calm are moderate, as this feed is designed for light to moderate exercise. Micronization ensures digestibility in the small intestine is high and so hindgut fermentation problems should be limited. However, it is always advisable to use low levels, as with any hard feed, when feeding laminitics. Luckily, in combination with Speedi-Beet or Fibre-Beet this can easily be achieved with Cool’n’Calm.

What are chelated minerals and how are they good for my horse?

Unlike some mineral supplements that use inorganic salts (for example, zinc sulphate) our supplements use minerals that are linked to organic components such as amino acids (chelation). This means that the body “recognises” the molecules and selectively absorbs them. When absorbed, the chelated minerals are in a form that can be rapidly incorporated into the metabolic processes.
