We are delighted to announce that the lucky winner of our
on-stand competition, which was held at the Winter Dressage
Championships, is Linda Bennett.

Based near Cheltenham in Gloucestershire, Linda has
received a six month supply of British Horse Feeds Horse & Pony
Mix, for her horse Duke.

Containing carefully selected natural ingredients to help
keep horses in tip top condition, Horse & Pony Mix and Cubes
are ideal for horses in medium work.

These non-heating feeds provide an excellent source of
fibre and can help enhance coat condition, gut integrity and
quality hoof formation.

One of the first equine feeds to provide 100% of key
minerals in a natural form, both feeds contain a rich oil source to
help condition the skin and coat as well as lubricate the joints,
including OMEGA 3 and OMEGA 6 fatty acids.

Horse & Pony Mix and Horse & Pony Cubes are

The first month of sponsorship has flown by for the
Speedi-Beet Team. For most of us April has been a washout with
flooded fields and cancelled events but this hasn't stopped our
talented ten! Here is what they have been getting up
to...

 Kirsty Loveday &
Owen

The beginning of April I spent recovering from the
weekend away at the under 25s high profile show at Keysoe where
Owen and I came 2nd and 5th in both Elementary classes. I was
exceptionally pleased as this was his first outing in six months
and Owen is not used to staying away from home.

We have also competed at Vale View and came 4th in
both the Elementary classes and have qualified for the area
festivals at Elementary level!

The next couple of outings will be increasing Owens
security levels out and about to push our marks back up to what
they should be and where we finished at last year before my
pregnancy slowed me up.

At home we are working on his lateral movements but
always revising simple things like transitions and being around my
inside leg. I am aiming to attempt our first medium mid-summer. I
must get myself sitting (it's just so easy to rise). So I shall be
working on that too. Owens half pass is starting to come together
he just gets slightly excited.

I'm also taking my youngster on various outings to
conquer the napping and explosions when we're out before I risk
putting him back in a warm up arena and then get him tackling a
couple of prelims in to the summer.

Vicki Casey & Mr
Chips

April has been somewhat a very busy month for me!
With the weather starting so fabulous we were getting more done
than usual. I'm now in my 4th month of owning Chips and it's been a
real journey!

We've been out to dressage and placed 3rd (69.2%) in
a Novice which I was chuffed with! I'm no dressage rider. Our show
jumping has come on in leaps and bounds and we're on a steady roll
of double clears.

We have also had plenty of training from Heidi
Woodhead and I've been shouted at quite a lot! Cross country is
definitely where I'm falling at the moment, however seen as last
time I landed in a ditch; nobody is really blaming me for being
defensive.

I've had my other horse out show jumping and getting
event fit ready for his first run next weekend, I'm not too excited
it'll be a relief when the dressage is over as he likes to add
extra movements!

Mr Chips has had three visits from the
physiotherapist this month, poor boy has a sore back which is
giving him headaches due to him compensating! Becky (Yorkshire
Animal Physiotherapy) is fabulous with my boys and I couldn't have
found anybody better to treat them. I've had a few sessions with
Cooper Wilson as well, he is a fabulous Reiki master and horse
communicator. He's helped me a lot over the years with my riding
and bringing on the young horses.

Hopefully I'll have plenty more to say in May! The season
doesn't feel like it's really got going yet.

Jennie Daniels & Lady
Jane

Due to poor weather and no facilities, Lady Jane
(JJ) does very little over the winter apart from the odd little
hack out. As it is now April and events for us are due to start
soon, we have been working on our fitness, although the fitness has
been more JJ than me, I must admit.

Our fitness has been in the way of a lot of lunging
and some hacks out, although lunging is not great at the moment due
to how wet and muddy the fields are (no school/arena). I have also
just had my children off school for a total of three weeks (their
schools overlapped by a week) which has meant that we have not been
able to hack out much either.

JJ suffers from laminitis and I have to be very
careful with what she eats, hence why I feed Speedi-Beet and
Fibre-Beet. She is doing ok at the moment but is sulking at having
to wear a muzzle when out in the field!

The first English Civil War event we should of had
this year, has been cancelled, so it is now the first next month.
Really looking forward to this event, although no-one tell JJ, as
you know what horses are like when they hear about "party"
plans.

JJ and I have been together for 20 years, and she is
21 this year. Although I have been doing cavalry
re-enactment for about 15 years, it has only been about the last
eight years that I have been brave enough to take my own horse.
Taking your own horse is a huge responsibility and means I have to
cajole her in a small electric fence paddock overnight (which I
take with me) when we are away. It is lovely to hear your horse
munching away just metres from your tent when you go to sleep
though. The first thing I check when I wake up is if she is still
there. She has been known to go for
a little wonder when the batteries on my energizer are getting
rather low!

Paige Staff &
Magic

This month, Magic Moments III (Magic) and I have
been working on developing our show jumping skills, and also some
fitness training, which came in very useful at our first JumpCross
competition of the season on Sunday 22nd April.

After making a last minute decision to enter the
class, Magic and I ended up winning the 2ft3" class with a clear
round in 195 seconds, which was further reduced by our succession
in jumping the Joker fence at the end of the course, knocking
another 40 seconds off our time. We entered this class to gain
points and as a practice for the next class: the JumpCross Young
Riders Qualifier (YRC). Slightly nervous, as it was our biggest and
most technical course to date, Magic and I entered the class and
returned home after a very good round, even making a last minute
decision to jump the big Joker fence at the end, which I had been
dead-set against prior to the class.

It was a personal achievement as it was the highest
JumpCross jump we had ever jumped, and, as competition in the class
was fierce, Magic and I had resigned ourselves to 2nd place after
another competitor completed a good round so that our scores were
practically neck-and-neck, with us at a slight
disadvantage.

However, in a twist of fate, Magic and I ended up
WINNING the YRC Qualifier by having a quicker raw time, landing us
a place at the finals near Peterborough, in June this year, and a
selection of goodies!

At the finals, we will have the opportunity to be
paired with a professional rider as part of a team challenge, and
will also be in with the chance of winning a share of the £1000
prize fund. This is a massive achievement for us; I am so proud of
Magic who jumped her heart out, and this has enabled us to take our
JumpCross to the next level for the first time.

Our success is proof of what can be achieved if you
believe in yourself and your horse/pony. Next month we plan to
compete at BSJA and another JumpCross competition, as well as
training at home.

 Ellie Rowlands &
Silver

I've had a rather busy April!
Silver and I conquered our fear of wide spreads which was fantastic
and we've jumped 1m05 with ease! This April we haven't really done
any competing due to bad weather and fitness work but throughout
the next few months I have quite a lot of competitions planned
which should be good, one of which is 'Arena Eventing' which will
be interesting.

At the beginning of April we did a lot of hill
work/hacking to help with the fitness and it went really well and
Silver is muscling up just right, which is fab! Towards the end of
April we did some jumping, mainly jump off turns which Silver is
great at so hopefully that will do us well in our
competitions.

Silver has also been treated to a whole new wardrobe
bless her, so she's prepared for any of this strange British
weather! I really feel that this month, although we haven't done
anything spectacular that me and Silver have really improved and
grown as a pair. So overall we've had a good
month.

 Eleanor Rycroft &
Tyler

April has been a busy month for me and Tyler, which
was not helped by me catching a sickness bug in the middle of the
Easter holidays! However, on the first day of April we managed to
go out to Vale View Equestrian for the Trailblazers dressage series
second rounds, and I was thrilled to qualify for the National
Championships in the Prelim, Novice and Elementary classes! I was
really pleased with Tyler because he tried his hardest throughout
the whole day and I can't wait to go to the Championships at the
end of July!

Then followed the period when I was confined to bed,
which was a bit of a nightmare because our Pony Club's dressage
competition was looming on the horizon, and Tyler and I were
nowhere near prepared. However we did manage to get there and
although it wasn't our finest hour (you can read the whole story on
Facebook) we didn't utterly disgrace ourselves and we are now
looking ahead to our next competition - the Northern BYRDS
selection competition on the May bank holiday. We have had several
lessons to prepare for this, and I feel that Tyler's going really
well- watch this space!

Other than dressage, we decided to go show-jumping
at our local Equestrian centre over the Easter holidays, which
proved a successful outing with a double clear in the 65cm class
(if I had been wearing my show jacket I would have qualified for
the Trailblazers second rounds!) which earned us third place, and
Tyler jumped really well around the 75cm course, just knocking a
pole when he lost concentration (we still came
4th!).

This was a real achievement for us and I think that
we will soon be stepping up to do the 85cm class. I also attended a
sports psychology day run by Charlie Unwin, which has proved to be
really useful and I feel that I am much more effective both in
competition and riding at home.

As I have my GCSEs coming up next month, May won't be very
busy for us as far as competing is concerned but I do go on study
leave which means that I might be able to ride and dodge the rain.
I also hope to go cross-country schooling at a new course that we
haven't been to before and start gearing up for our 'Summer of
Championships' (Trailblazers, BD Regionals and, fingers crossed,
some BYRDS competitions).

Charlotte Bird &
Woody

Well, what an unbelievable month it has been!
Regarding the weather as well!

So, our month started off in a great way with being
chosen to represent British Horse Feeds, ever since, I have had
people coming up to me and asking me in shops all about who I was
and who Woody was too! I felt very special!

Since then, we've only been too a few shows due to
the weather, but they were great fun and a very good learning
experience never the less! In March, we went to our first junior
BSJA show at Arena UK in Grantham (Lincolnshire). Unfortunately,
our round was not the best, but to say Woody is only a novice pony,
we both did very well.

Our second outing of the month
was at Vale View EC in Leicestershire. As Woody and I had not been
out jumping for a while, we decided to enter the 75cm-85cm class
for a bit of a 'practise round' to get used to the course. I felt
that Woody was really good (despite his big, fat, belly full of
grass)! The only hiccup of the round was a slight disapproval of
striding between the both of us, at the last part of the treble
combination. Woody and I jumped through the first two parts of the
combination fine, but, coming up to the last part, I pushed for a
longer stride, and Woody waited for an extra one! The only thought
that went through my mind at this moment in time was 'hold on!'
Woody stopped, and then jumped, forcing me onto his neck whilst
going over the jump in mid-air, all I heard the commentator saying
'well sat!'.

Inevitably we had that fence down, which was very
unfortunate but understandable in the circumstances. Although I did
get a very big well done and a round of applause from the
photographer and even managed to come
2nd! Later on during the day,
I decided to enter into the 85cm-95cm first round class. I was very
nervous, but I knew we could do it. I just had to put my trust in
Woody!

Woody flew round the course at the start, but I did
feel that he was jumping a bit 'baby-ish' over the first few fences
as they were very big and up to height. Never the less, I was
overwhelmed to find out that we won the class, Woody is a star!
Just two years ago, we were jumping around 35cm courses, and now we
are jumping up to almost 3ft at shows! Not giving up on either of
us was the best decision I have ever made in my whole entire
life!

Despite the horrid weather here in Nottinghamshire,
Woody and I have still been making the most of the lighter nights
and training hard all week long. Woody's schooling has come on so
much over the past few weeks he really does feel like a different
pony after a slight bit and tack change. I decided to change
Woody's bit from a Wilkie bit to a Wilkie happy mouth with a
roller. This is one of the kindest bits out, and as Woody is not a
strong pony, but can get hot headed, we wanted something that was
kind and had breaks. I would like to offer my thanks to the Horse
Bit Bank.

Also, we decided to have a change of spurs
throughout the past few days, as I felt that my steel spurs were
causing Woody a little bit of discomfort. So, now I have changed
into some rubber ball spurs and the difference is tremendous! Who
would have thought that a martingale could cause Woody to lift his
head higher either? What a strange thing to happen, but now we have
taken it off, Woody is stretching out beautifully over fences and
his outline whilst schooling and on the flat is perfect and back to
normal. This just proves that correctly fitted, suitable tack
really does do the job!

Over the next few months we have a few working
hunter qualifiers, junior BSJA shows, and lots of BSJA summer
premier shows. Next month, we are out to Arena UK and Weston Lawns
to make the most of the outdoor weather and maybe try a scope
qualifier. But, this is all depending on how we are going as a
partnership, after all patience and practise is paramount as this
equals perfection!

 Sarah Barnes &
Costa

At the moment I'm in my second year at
the University of Manchester, studying Pharmacy. Although Costa is
at home in Preston, I manage to ride once or twice a week. My mum
looks after Costa during term time, and keeps him fit and happy,
hacking him out for miles.

Costa is very full of himself at this time of year.
When I got on him in the Easter break, he was incredibly exuberant
and my arms felt a foot longer when I dismounted. We went for a
flatwork lesson with Pony Club, and he was a lot more settled. If
anything I think he was disappointed there were no jumps
involved!

Last week, we went to unaffiliated dressage, and I
usually suffer from really bad nerves, but last month we took part
in the Pony Club national instructor's conference, riding in front
of 200 instructors and taught by Yogi Breisner- I think my nerves
have been cured! We rode an average test, and came
4th with
62.4%.

We also went on a quick trip to the beach and Costa
really enjoyed having a good leg stretch. I'd hoped to take him
cross country training in preparation for eventing next month, but
the never ending rain has put a stop to those plans. Perhaps next
week…

In the meantime, Costa has been enjoying tucking in
to his Fibre Beet and Ultimate Performance Mix, and I look forwards
to seeing how he performs on his new diet!

 Melanie Davison &
C.S. Khan

Well April has been quiet for Khan; his last outing
was in March where he was retired after 80km in a FEI 2*120km ride.
After that ride he had a couple of weeks off, when I brought him
back into work he was certainly full of the joys of
spring!

For the first week back in work he was doing shorter
canter pieces of up to an hour but this week I have been taking him
up around our canter loop several times, he will do this three or
four times a week. I am very lucky to have a four mile loop of down
land to train on without any gates or roads and with no one else
using it, this is a huge help with Khans fitness
work.

I was aiming to take him to do a 40km Competitive
Ride at The Mynydd Machen ride in Wales on the
28th April but sadly it was
cancelled due to a water logged venue, they do say April showers I
suppose!

There has so far been a few cancellations of rides
this year as the next FEI ride I was going to aim Khan for was
Euston Park on the 12th of May
but sadly it has been postponed, I am hoping they will hold a
mid-week ride but if not the next FEI ride is the
27th May.

I am going to try to get Khan to my endurance group
training ride on the 5th May
(I am a member of the Cotswold Group). If I can't take him to that
I will have to rethink my plans and try to find another ride
between now and the end of May.

I will hope to have more news next month until then
myself and Khan will be doing lots of canter
work!

Lucy Barclay &
Golly

Following last driving season Golly had a steady winter
and was kept ticking over with hacking out and ridden dressage
lessons. I started driving her again at the beginning of January,
and since then it's been all systems go to get her fitness levels
back up ready to start competing again. We live in just about the
flattest part of Lincolnshire possible, so have to box up to do
hill work in the beautiful Lincolnshire Wolds. We try to go to the
hills once a week with my backstepper Susie Day riding her, and
then again with me driving, combined with fortnightly alternate
ridden and driven dressage lessons. On top of this we have regular
driven training sessions with the other GB para team hopefuls, and
then just usual hacking out and schooling sessions at home. So
Golly has a very varied exercise plan, and is also incredibly
well-travelled, as our driving trainer is 2.5 hours away, and none
of our competition venues are any closer either!

We had our first competition at Ashfields, in Essex,
achieving some personal bests, but actually only ending 3rd (out of
4!) in our class. Not great on paper, but I drove my first double
clear in the cones phase - no balls down and inside the time
allowed - so that was a brilliant result, and obviously the endless
hours of training has paid off! Our obstacle times were also
competitive, and we felt we had managed some much better turns and
shorter routes than we might normally have done, again down to our
trainer's efforts and my new-found skill for actually remembering
where we are going! So all in all a very successful weekend, and we
even managed to stay pretty dry, despite the threat of storms at
all times.

Since then the weather has been horrendous to say the
least, so we have battled on and wrapped up to continue on as best
as we can. I'm sure people think we are crackers when they pass us
on the roads in head to toe waterproofs with our heads down, all
three of us looking thoroughly fed up! But as Golly's fitness
levels really are so important it's just a case of getting on with
it and hoping we get some dry weather soon. All the rain has meant
we can't use our grass arena, so unfortunately we have to do
without proper schooling sessions other than when we actually
travel for a lesson, so fingers crossed it improves as we need all
the dressage practice we can get!

Our next competition is at Tutbury on the 12th/13th
May, so very much looking forward to that as it's not one I've been
to before. We are arriving the day before for team training, and so
with a bit of luck we will be on form for the real thing. Driving
is a very sociable sport, and we have made some really close
friends on the circuit, so it's always fun to meet up with everyone
each time and have a good catch up, and also meet new people too.
I've never come across the same level of camaraderie in any other
equestrian discipline - people are genuinely helpful and full of
advice without actually interfering, and it all contributes to the
great atmosphere at all of the competitions.

Susie and I were very excited to receive our Speedi
Beet Team jackets yesterday. We wore them out driving today feeling
very important! Thank you Speedi Beet for thinking we were
deserving of sponsorship - hopefully we will be able to produce
some great results this coming season, and fingers crossed the
Speedi Beet Team jackets will make it to Holland for the World
Championships if we continue to do well!

Charlotte Dujardin and Kim Seaby put in top performances to lead
the British Horse Feeds Open and Restricted Advanced Medium at the
Winter Dressage Championships.

The British Horse Feeds Advanced Medium Open Championship
attracted a host of professional and amateur riders, providing
spectators with a showcase of top quality dressage action.

The top three riders, all trained by Carl Hester at
his Gloucestershire yard , battled it out for the title but it was
Carl's star pupil Charlotte Dujardin riding Don Archie who was
crowned champion with 74.12%. Owned by Carl and Anne Cory, Don
Archie is British-bred by Kate Carter using Dimaggio.

In second place with 70.35%, Jo Hamilton and Vivaldi V
finished ahead of Katie Bailey and Nip Tuck (68.25%).

A delighted Charlotte said; "I'm really pleased with Don
Archie today - he's grown up so much over the last year and matured
a lot. I'm also thrilled with how he dealt with the atmosphere in
the arena. He didn't do much last year as I was concentrating on
Valegro but he's really coming on and we'll continue at small tour
level this year and aim to go Grand Prix early in 2013."

In the British Horse Feeds Advanced Medium Restricted
Championship it was Hampshire-based Kim Seaby and nine-year old
German-bred mare Rubin-Esque who secured the top spot in a field of
20 with 67.02%.

"I'm so happy with her, She was really
consistent in the arena today," said a delighted Kim. "We 'held our
breath' a little at the start, until the walk. We then both
relaxed, remembered to breathe and from then on it felt noticeably
better."

"'Robin' has a lot of power which, as she's become older
and stronger, has become easier to harness. We can now keep the
power and the balance at a good level."

"We've owned her since she was a two-year-old, when
she was bought as a project for me to train on," said Kim, who
rides and works for James Burtwell. "She's been great and has all
the ability. She's a chestnut mare who likes to be in control and
she does have an opinion, but when she's on-side she gives
everything."

"We hope to kick on for prix st georges and maybe qualify
for the PSG freestyle next year. She's finding the advanced work
easy, it's all there. We just need to work on putting it together
for a test."

In second place, David Rumsey and DRD
Florina H scored 66.84% and Jane Chatterton riding Cranswicks
Monopoly finshed third with a score of 66.05%.

British Horse Feeds is delighted to announce sponsorship
of ten lucky entrants that applied for support in the companies
search for Speedi-Beet Team members.

The competition was open to all equestrian enthusiasts,
regardless of their level, ability or discipline. The winners were
chosen as they all displayed an incredible passion for their horses
and ponies and were dedicated to providing them with the best
possible nutrition.

Said Liz Hesketh of British Horse Feeds: "We have truly
enjoyed reading every single entry in this competition; it has been
inspiring to hear from so many dedicated and determined riders and
owners.

"The panel of judges found the final selection incredibly
hard to make as all of the applicants were very deserving. We
originally had three places in mind for the Speedi-Beet Team but
the fact we have ended up with ten people is testament to the large
number of fantastic entries we received."

Paige Staff and Magic, Mel Davison and C.S.Khan, Sarah Barnes and

British Horse Feeds is delighted to announce that the
lucky
winner of their recent online competition is Ruth Dresman from
Wiltshire, who
is now the excited owner of an Equilibrium Therapy Massage
Pad.

Said Ruth: "I am so thrilled; my two horses are complete
hedonists who will probably fight over the massage pad!

"They both spent the winter out 24/7 on Fibre-Beet and hay
and have emerged in fabulous condition. They were worked most days
and had
enough energy without being over-exuberant. Thank you for a great
product."

Ruth owns Braveheart, a six-year-old chestnut gelding who
came to Ruth straight out of flat racing from a local yard. He is
hacked and
schooled most days and partakes in riding club training sessions
with the plan
to eventually start riding club level eventing.

Cherry, a bay Fell type, rising seven, is Ruth's other
horse
who was bought in November to be ridden by her family and friends,
out hacking
and in lessons. Both horses are rugged according to the weather
and get hay and
Fibre-Beet through the winter and Speedi-Beet in summer.

Said Ruth: "Come summer, I will restrict their grass.
Feeding
Speedi-Beet will help me to provide sufficient fibre for healthy
guts. I am
aware of the statistics on racehorse ulcers and these facts have
helped me to
plan what I understand to be a healthy regime for both horses,
even if I do
have to end up brushing off a lot of mud!"

Five runners up each received a three month supply of
Speedi-Beet. Coral Herbert, Francis Crithcley and Susanne Beesley
are all
looking forward to trying Speedi-Beet as they have never used it
before.

Laura Jones and Sharon Moore, already fans of Speedi-Beet,
were delighted with their prize.

Said Sharon: "My 16hh Thoroughbred Sir Talbot spent ten
years on the racetrack and was a Cheltenham Festival Winner (The
County
Hurdle). Now we enjoy hacking out and the occasional jump, so
Speedi-Beet is
great for him as it is very palatable and non-heating.

"The fact that it is ready in minutes rather than hours
makes it very convenient. Sir Talbot loves nothing better than
getting dirty,
food and a good scratch and a piece of flapjack. He's thoroughly
spoilt."

Keep checking the website, our next fabulous
competition
will be launching soon!
