Here in the latest ‘Meet The Team’ we meet National Sales Representative Martin Bielby at British Horse Feeds…
At what age did you become involved with horses?
Having left school, I attended college and studied engineering after passing my exams. I left to pursue a lifelong ambition to work in horse racing. After working for various racehorse trainers I became a jockey, where I rode over hurdles. I had a couple of rides on the flat however, at 8 stone 10lbs it was a struggle!
Where did you work before British Horse Feeds and what experiences did you gain from this role?
I retired from the saddle and took a position at The Northern Racing College as an Instructor. My role developed to Senior Training Instructor/NVQ Assessor and Verifier for the Racing Industry.
After this I became a racehorse trainer. I trained for around five years, until I discovered the world of sales. As a trainer I started to look specifically at nutrition for the demands of racing alongside the fitness and training routines.
Not a lot of people know this, but at one stage I was leading Trainer at Newmarket. I had a better winner to runners’ ratio than Sir Henry Cecil!
How long have you worked at British Horse Feeds?
I have been employed by I’Anson’s for almost 14 years now. I have always felt part of the family. I have seen the launch of Fibre-Beet and our latest product, Cooked Linseed.
What do you most enjoy about working at British Horse Feeds?
I love all aspects of my role and enjoy meetings with customers, old and new. My days are really varied from meeting wholesalers and retailers, to attending shows and visiting yards.
Do you have a favourite product and why?
It has to be Fibre-Beet, from watching the product being developed and launched and now selling over 100 tonnes per month.
