Well what a brilliant 2019 Team Sommerville have had! We have shared many more great memories with team members old and new and have seen a few new fluffy faces too. However firstly we must write a note on how our horses success runs down to all of our brilliant sponsors and their products, one very important one being FIBRE-BEET!
Fibre-Beet keeps all our horses looking fantastic and on top of their game with all the benefits Fibre-Beet gives.

Our season started off at Aston Le Walls Horse trials with new boy to the yard Global Ask… he did not disappoint! He did a beautiful test of 24 in the BE100, with a sterling double clear to come 2nd. Kilcannon Dragonfly was a good boy running HC in the BE90 with a 31.3 dressage and double clear. The next weekends were on to Oasby Horse trials and Lincoln Horse Trials. Talent and Altaskin Jack had good first runs in the OI at Oasby both doing good rounds, Global Ask posted another good round in the BE100 finishing 4th and Kilkcannon Dragonfly did another good run in the BE90. Lincoln was another good early season run for Talent and Altaskin Jack both posting good tests and double clears.

We then saw an early season win for Global Ask at Norton Disney in the BE100. He posted an impressive 20.8 dressage with a smooth double clear.
Next road trip was the all-important Badminton Horse Trials. Talent was packed up and all ready to go! He posted a good test of 35.7 being a lot calmer in the huge atmosphere at Badminton. Cross Country day never disappoints with Talent, he soared around the course clear, always showing what a super hero he is. In the showjumping he had an unfortunate rail, however he posted his best result finishing 33rd. We are so proud of this little horse and what big dreams he has helped James achieve. Small note also… James did have a win at Badminton… he won best dressed!!! Lucie was thrilled as it resulted in her receiving a beautiful HiHo Silver necklace!
Next win of the season went to Glenomra Bill at Bishop Burton Horse trials in the BE100 section. He finished on his dressage score of a fantastic 22.5!! Miss Pandora also posted a good result at Bishop Burton coming 8th in the Novice section.
Another win was on the cards for Global Ask in the BE100 Open, finishing also on his dressage score of 25.5. We also had some new arrival on the yard, Cornascriebe Im the Man and Miss Pandora. Both Grey (much to Lucie’s delight trying to keep them clean) but both lovely horses! We also welcomed new sponsor Equilibrium Products who provide the horses with the best protection BOOTS! They have a wide range of boots protecting all our precious boys and girls!
A big road trip was upon Team Sommerville, Talent and James had been selected to represent Great Britain in another Nations Cup in Strzegom. Talent was a good boy again, doing a beautiful test (first to go in the team, so in my opinion harshly marked!) with another clear cross country on the cards and a good show jumping round to finish up individual 9th and Team Silver!
Cornascriebe Im the man posted a good result in the BE90 Open coming 3rd with a 25 dressage and a double clear at Warwick Hall, along with Kilcannon Dragonfly positioning in 8th in the BE100 section.
Next up was Burgham International where Miss Pandora who was a winner in the Novice section and Global Ask came 6th. Talent had a good run in the CCIL 4* format with a steady double clear.
We had a new horse arrive mid-season, Innovania. She was a super girl in her first event coming 1st in the BE100 at Shelford Manor. Kilcannon Dragonfly also picked up a good placing coming 4th in the BE100.
Then it was Burghley Horse Trials, this was Talent and James’ first time competing in the CCIL 5* at Burghley. However James has been a regular in the BYEH final, competing a huge number of 7 one year in the final! We had such a great week, even though Ossian our stable lad lost his cap out of the lorry window on route to Burghley!
Talent produced a nice test, he was a little tense, but he did keep it all together to score a respectable 35.1. Cross country day came and it all got our nerves going!

Not many people were returning across the finish line on course, and many having faults. However when the time came for James and Talent to run across the country, Talent knew what he had to do. James and Talent know each other inside out and showed it across one of the toughest courses in the world. They produced a fantastic and stylish clear. Team Sommerville camp were absolutely thrilled and very excited. Sunday morning came and Talent was a little jarred up and sore. Probably jumping with such enthusiasm did the trick! It was such a heart break and a shame to finish our Burghley week with Talent not passing the second trot up after such an amazing run Saturday. We were all so sad, however happy in the knowledge Talent was well and happy to compete another day, nothing could take away how incredible he was on the Saturday across the country.
Talent is now on a well-deserved rest and holiday. He is happy hacking out and having a good time in the field. He will aim to be back out next year looking forward to another Badminton and Burghley. We have had another fantastic and exciting year with this super horse and cannot wait for the 2020 season with him.
The season was beginning to draw to a close after September. But we finished with a few more fantastic results. We had another 2nd at Frickley with Global Ask in the BE100 Open section. Next on the agenda was Allerton Park and James had a fantastic event there and came home with numerous wins and other good placing’s, it is always lovely to do so well at your home event.
Winners at Allerton Park included:
Glenorma Bill – BE100
Global Ask – Novice
Inovannia – BE100
Altaskin Jack – Open Intermediate
Other notable placings at Allerton included:
Kilcannon Dragonfly – 5th BE100
Eddison NJ – 2nd IN
Eddison NJ went onto a win at Askham Bryan in the ON. The following day we had a few horses down to run however with the terrible weather and bad ground we decided to save them for another day.
The following event was Oasby where James and the horses brought in more fantastic results with a 6th in the Novice for Miss Pandora and a second for Eddison NJ in the Intermediate. Altaskin Jack was also a good boy pulling out another win in the OI.
We were all set for our final event at Norton Disney with a fair few all plaited and ready. Sadly with such terrible weather our season was cut short and Norton Disney had to be abandon. We have been so happy with all our super star horses this season. They have all worked so hard and produced some fantastic results; we are now all the more keen to start the 2020 season!
Now it is onto the next event of the year…..Lucinda and James’ wedding! Let’s pray for good weather… or at least no rain!!!
